Our Story

Shenay Djemal

It was not long before they married, started a family and decided to set up shop ‘Up The Junction’ in Battersea providing a different type of garment care service. The year was 1974 when strikes and electricity shortages were commonplace and retail prices went up by 19%; when Abba came to fame by winning the European Song Contest and high cut boots and low cut trousers were all the fashion; when polyester was the material of choice and bright colours were everywhere.

Hassan and Shenay Djemal were both in their early twenties when they found work in the garment trade. He as a precision presser for a leading tailors in the Elephant and Castle while Shenay found work as a talented seamstress in Peckham.

Bellevue London, Hoffman Presser

Hassan and Shenay rented premises at 13 Northcote Road, home to one of south London's favourite street markets and close to the famous Edwardian department store, Arding and Hobbs, opposite Britain's busiest railway station, Clapham Junction.

Their degree of thoroughness, experience and passion for cleaning, altering and repairing clothes meant that the Djemal's had established an enviable reputation for exceptional quality, reliability and personal service.

In 1992 shortly after finishing his degree their eldest son Billy joined the family business. Also at this point the business moved to premises opposite where it continued to excel. In 2007 Hassan and Shenay eventually retired, Kenny their youngest son joined in 2008 and a partnership was born.

Like their parents before them Billy and Kenny are exceptional garment care professionals and are passionate about providing a personal service. They believe it is the excellence of their people, specialist knowledge, their belief in family values and continuous investment in the latest equipment and systems that defines Bellevue.

For over 40 years this family business has been providing the best quality cleaning service in south London. The plan is to continue to do so for many years to come. It is for this reason that its technicians and tailors, cleaning operatives and pressers were re-located from the cramped corners of the Northcote Road shop in 2016 to a new, purpose-built, airy and large state-of-the-art facility a short distance away.
